2015: The year ahead in boccia

Boccia is hugely popular in many circles because it is one of the few sports for high needs athletes.  With the Paralympic season fast approaching, athletes are hard at work preparing on every level.

`

January

  • Regional Skills Session and Competition in boccia in Jack Kane Sports Centre, Edinburgh on January 13 in Scotland.
  • Cerebral Palsy Society Holiday Tournament takes place at Allan Brewster Recreation Centre, Papatoetoe, Auckland, New Zealand on January 17 – 18.
  • Dunedein Boccia Club meets at the South Dunedin Presbyterian Church Hall on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 6:30pm. Paul Coffey is the local contact.

February

  • Dunedein Boccia Club meets at the South Dunedin Presbyterian Church Hall on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 6:30pm. Paul Coffey is the local contact.

March

  • The Queensland State Titles take place on March 7 – 8.
  • Victoria State Titles take place from March 14 – 15 in Australia.
  • New South Wales State Titles take place from March 20 – 22 in Australia.

April

  • The New Zealand Junior Disability Games take place from April 10 – 12 at  St Peter’s College, Cambridge.Sports on the program include ambulant football, athletics, blind cricket, boccia, cycling, equestrian, goalball, powerchair football, rowing, swimming, triathlon, waka ama, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.
  • Lower North Island Boccia Championships are scheduled to be held at the ASB Sports Centre, Kilbirnie, Wellington on April 18 – 19.

 

May

  • On May 30, Regional Open Boccia Championships take place at the The Jack Kane Centre, Edinburgh.
  • From May 1 – 10, Australian National Boccia Titles take place at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen, Sydney.
  • Dunedein Boccia Club meets at the South Dunedin Presbyterian Church Hall on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 6:30pm. Paul Coffey is the local contact.

 

June

  • Upper North Island Boccia Championships take place at the Allan Brewster Leisure Centre, Tavern Lane, Papatoetoe, Auckland on June 20 – 21.

July

  • The 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games open on 25 July 2015 and close on August 2 in  Los Angeles, California.  Sports on the program include Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball., Beach Volleyball, Basketball, Bocce. Bowling, Cycling, Equestrian, Football (Soccer), Golf, Gymnastics, Judo, Kayaking, Open Water Swim, Powerlifting, Rollerskating, Sailing, Table Tennis, Team Handball, Tennis, Triathlon, Softball, Volleyball.
  • Dunedein Boccia Club meets at the South Dunedin Presbyterian Church Hall on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 6:30pm. Paul Coffey is the local contact.

August

  • From August 7 – 15, the Para Pan American Games take place in Toronto. Archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, football 5-a-side, football 7-a-side, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchiar tennis are all on the program.
  • On August 8 – 9, South Island Boccia Championships take place at St Hilda’s Collegiate School Gymasium, Dunedin, New Zealand.

September

October

November

  • Paralympic Test Event will take place from November 12- 14 at the Riocentro Pavillion, Rio, Brazil. The test event for the Boccia competition at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will take place in November. Boccia players from around the world will be able to compete in and experience what will become one of the iconic venues of the games.
  • From November 20 – 23, the New Zealand National Boccia Championships happen at the Pioneer Recreation & Sport Centre, Lyttelton Street, Somerfield, Christchurch.
  • Dunedein Boccia Club meets at the South Dunedin Presbyterian Church Hall on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 6:30pm. Paul Coffey is the local contact.

December

  • 2015 Asean Para Games take place in Singapore from December 3 – 9.  Sports on the program include archery, athletics, boccia, chess, badminton and five-a-side football, seven-a-side football, goalball, powerlifting, sailing, tenpin bowling, shooting, swimming, table tennis and wheelchair basketball.
