2015: The year ahead in wheelchair basketball

With the 2016 Paralympics coming up, 2015 is a year for teams to get experience in preparation for the event.  With global popularity for the game, there is a lot going on.

January

  • The United States men’s national team starts off with a selection camp  at the Olympic Training Center Jin Colorado Springs, CO from January 2-6, 2014.
  • Phoenix Banner Wheelchair Mercury 8th Annual Roundup takes place on January 10 – 11 at the Virginia G Piper Sports and Fitness Center .  It is a women’s team event being played on NCCAA courts.
  • Oklahoma Blaze is being played on January 17 and 18  at University of Central Oklahoma Wellness.
  • 3rd Annual Miami Heat Wheels Invitational Tournament takes place from January 16 to January 18  at the Miami Springs Recreation Center .
  • The United States women have a USA Women’s Selection Camp  at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado from January 22-26.
  • 17th Annual Katie Kirlin Jr Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will be held at the Carousel House at Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia, PA, from  January 23-25. There is no registration fee for this Junior Division tournament.
  • The Phoenix Banner Wheelchair Suns 16th Annual Roundup will be hosted at Virginia G Piper sports & Fitness Center from January 24-25, 2015.
  • Las Vegas DIII Tournament will be held at UNLV-Mc Dermott Buildings North and South Gyms January 24-25.
  • The 4th Annual Basketball Bonanza will be held at Warren Park in Chicago from January 24-25.  There will be a junior and prep division.
  • The Wheelchair Mavs Tournament will be held at University of Texas at Arlington January 30- February 1.  This is a Champions division event.
  • Second Annual Louisiana Tech University Department of Kinesiology Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will be held at Lambright Sports and Wellness Center from January 31, 2015-February 1, 2015.
  • The Midwest Jr Regional Tournament will be held at University of Nebraska January 31- February 1. There is no registration or spectator fee for this Junior Division tournament.
  • Sutherland Wheelchair Basketball takes place at Sutherland Basketball Stadium, Australia from  8:30 pm – 10:00 pm every Thursday.
  • Coffs Harbour Wheelchair Basketball takes place at the Sportz Central in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales at 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm every Friday.
  • Griffith Wheelchair Basketball takes place every Saturday from 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm at the Westend Sports Stadium in Griffith, New South Wales.

February

  • Capital Invitation Tournament will be held at Fort Belvoir from February 7-8, 2015.
  • NBA/NWBA All Star Game will take place on February 8 in New York City.
  • The Youth Southern Regional Tournament will be held at the Lakeshore Foundation from February 13-15. Junior 10′ and Prep Divisons are welcome at this tournament.
  • The Sweetheart Tournament will be held at Butterfield Junior High School February 14.   This is a division 3 event in the United States.
  • A USA Men’s and Women’s Training Camp will be held at :Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama from February 19-22.
  • The 2015 MLK Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will be hosted February 20 – 22,2014 at the Southern Hills Community Center in Louisiana.
  • The All Star Invitational IV will be hels at the Silver Star Rec Center on February 21 and 22.  It is a DIII/Championship division tournament.
  • The Las Vegas DIII Tournament will be held at UNLV-Mc Dermott Buildings North and South Gyms from February 22-23.  It is a DIIIdivision tournament.

March

  • From March 5  – 7 in Colombia, Missouri, the  NIWBT will be held.
  • The 34th Annual Carousel House wheelchair Basketball Tournament will be held at the Carousel House Recreation Center March 6-8 in Philadelphia.
  • The West Coast Conference Championships will be held from March 7 – 8. It is a junior division tournament in Seattle.
  • National Tournament Rankings Due in the United States are due on March 9. All Division rankings will be finalized this date. No games played after this date will count towards post season rankings.
  • The  Southwest Conference Championship Tournament will be held at UTA in Arlington, Texas from March 14-15. It is a junior division tournament.
  • Lakeshore Cup – Women will be held. This is an international friendly featuring the USA women, Canada and two additional teams that will be held at the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama from March 14 – 20.
  • The Las Vegas DIII Tournament will be held at Minker Sports Complex March 14-15.
  • From March 20 -27, there is an international friendly tournament featuring the USA, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. The tournament will be held in Toronto, Canada.
  • The Women’s Division National Championship will be held at University of Texas, Arlington on March 27-29.
  • The Lakeshore Cup – Men takes place from March 28 to April 3. This is an international friendly featuring the USA, Canada, Australia and one additional team that will be held at the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • The 4th Annual National Wheelcats Invitational will be held at Vanderbilt University Recreation and Wellness Center March 28-29. This is a division 3 tournament.
  • Sutherland Wheelchair Basketball takes place at Sutherland Basketball Stadium, Australia from  8:30 pm – 10:00 pm every Thursday.

  • 2015 NWBA National Tournament takes place from April 16 – 19 in Louisville, Kentucky.
  • USA Men’s and Women’s Training Camp takes place from April 22 – 26. This is a training camp for the USA Men and Women in preparation for the 2014 Parapan American Games.
  • The New Zealand Junior Disability Games take place from April 10 – 12 at  St Peter’s College, Cambridge.Sports on the program include ambulant football, athletics, blind cricket, boccia, cycling, equestrian, goalball, powerchair football, rowing, swimming, triathlon, waka ama, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.
  • Sutherland Wheelchair Basketball takes place at Sutherland Basketball Stadium, Australia from  8:30 pm – 10:00 pm every Thursday.

  • From August 7 – 15, the Para Pan American Games take place in Toronto. Archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, football 5-a-side, football 7-a-side, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchiar tennis are all on the program.
  • From August 28 – September 7,  European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, Worcester takes place.
  • Sutherland Wheelchair Basketball takes place at Sutherland Basketball Stadium, Australia from  8:30 pm – 10:00 pm every Thursday.
