Algerians sweep IBSA African Goalball Championships

With the IBSA African Goalball Championships having concluded yesterday, Algeria has come away double champions after winning both the men’s and women’s competitions.  This gave Algeria two berths in goalball at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.

The Algerian women won the tournament after beating Egypt 11 – 1 in the final.  The bronze medal went to Morocco, who beat Tunisia 12 – 2.  Algeria qualified for the finals after beating  Morocco 10 – 0, Morocco 12 – 2, Tunisia 10 – 0, Tunisia 10 – 0, Egypt 12 – 2 and Egypt 10 – 0 in group play.  The other matches in group play saw Morocco beat Tunisia 13 – 7, Morocco beat Tunisia 14 – 6, Egypt beat Tunisia 10 – 0, Morocco lost to Egypt 12 – 2, and Egypt beat Tunisia 11 – 1.

On the men’s side, Algeria won after beating Egypt 7 – 2 in the final.  Morocco repeated their bronze medal performance in their placement game by defeating Tunisia 14 – 4.  Algeria qualified for the finals after beating Tunisia 13 – 3, while Egypt made the finals after beating Morocco 11 – 9.  In group play, Egypt beat Côte d’Ivoire 11 – 1, Egypt beat Tunisia 13 – 4,  Morocco beat Côte d’Ivoire 14 – 4, Tunisia lost  to Algeria 2 – 12, Morocco beat Egypt 12 – 2, Tunisia beat  Côte d’Ivoire 16 – 6, Algeria beat Morocco 15 – 5, Côte D ‘ Ivoire lost to  Algeria 0 – 10, Morocco  beat Tunisia 18 – 8, and Algeria beat Egypt 9 – 5.

 

 

 

The competition was important for regional development of the game as African teams rarely have the opportunity to meet and compete against each other.
