With the first edition of the Spanish national snowboarding championships having wrapped up yesterday, Astrid Fina Paredes and Oier Zabala Egaña came away as champions with Fina winning the women’s competition and Zabala winning the men’s.

In this first edition, only three snowboarders took place. In overcast conditions and on powdery snow at Grandvalira in Andorra, Fina from the Catalan region of Spain had a time of 43.66.  Her time on the same course was better than both male competitors.  First place Zabala from the Basque federation had a time of 47.91, while the men’s second place finish Oscar Gonzalez Gonzalez had a time of 51.03.

Para-snowboarding is a relatively new sport in the country compared to other winter sports like alpine skiing. Spain sent three snowboarders to Sochi, Aitor Martin Puertas and Urko Egea Zabalza on the men’s side and Fina on the women’s side. They finished 17th, 30th and 6th respectively in Sochi.  Federación Española de Deportes de Minusválidos Físicos organized this championship in part to help promote and grow the sport locally.
