Yesterday at the 2016 IPC Powerlifting World Cup, Kuala Lumpur, Australian powerlifter Nang Nguyen finished fifth in the 54 KG weight class with a lift best lift of 125 KG. While he tried and failed to make lifts of 132KG and 134KG in his last two attempts based on judging decisions, even had he made them the results would not have changed.
He said on Facebook following his performance, “Biggest thanks to Ben and Louis for supporting me though out my training and comps days.. And Big thanks to my supporters back home in Perth WA, Fleets West and WAIS couldn’t get this far without the support that u guys have given me, I’m very grateful.. I have given my best today even those coming into the comps with injured left shoulder! bodyweight at 53.2kgs. My lifts for today, 125kg, 132kg and134kg able to get them lifts up but unfortunately ref’s only given me the 125kg lift.. Still happy with it! but it could be better.! Can only go up from here and fast recovery! For next comps, I still have heap of work to do to get Pro lvl not giving up yet lol.. Originally from Hanoi, Vietnam, the Western Australian based Nguyen has been busy in the past year. He competed at last year’s IPC Powerlifting European Open Championships in Eger, Hungary, and the Australian national championship as part of his 2016 Summer Paralympic qualifying campaign. He is not currently ranked internationally in the 54KG class.
Vietnam’s Binh An Nguyen won the 54KG class with a best lift of 180KG. Greece’s Dimitrios Bakochristos won silver with a best lift of 177KG. China’s Jian Wang won bronze with a lift of 171KG.
