The Azerbaijan Paralympic shooting team is currently in training in Azerbaijan . Originally, one of the three World Cup events for shooting this year was scheduled to be get underway tomorrow in Norway, but it was canceled. These three World Cups are part of the 2016 Summer Paralympics qualifying events for the Games. 27 athletes were supposed to qualifyat the event, with the two ranked male competitors in each medal event getting a spot, the top ranked female finishers in each medal event getting a sport, and the two males and top female qualifying their NPC for a spot in the mixed medal event.
At the end of 2014, the country had four internationally ranked shooters: Kamran Zeynalov, Akbar Muradov, Elshad Mammadov and Yelena Taranova. Zeynalov was the highest ranked at 3rd in the P1 – Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event. He is also ranked in the P4 – Mixed 50m Free Pistol SH1, where is is 28th in the world. Taranova was the next highest ranked, at 15th in the P2 – Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1. Muradov finished the year ranked 28th in the P1 – Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 and 33rd in the P4 – Mixed 50m Free Pistol SH1. Mammadov finished 2014 ranked 38th in the P1 – Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1.
At the 2012 Summer Paralympics, the country sent two shooters: Muradov and Taranova. Neither did particularly well with Taranova having a national best finish of 5th in the 10m Air Pistol SH1, but failing to qualify into the finals in her other two events. Taranova had medaled in shooting at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens where she picked up a bronze, and medaled at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney where she picked up a silver. Muradov missed qualification into all three finals.
