Belgian men’s national 5-a-side play friendlies against Germany

Flag of Belgium. Flag of Belgium.

This past weekend, the Belgium men’s national 5-a-side football team played a pair of friendlies against Germany.  The Belgian’s lost Saturday’s match 2 – 0, and then won Sunday’s match 1 – 0.  Germany scored once in each half of the first game played in extremely hot condition.  Jean-Michel Bertinchamps scored his team’s only goal in the second game.

Most of the Belgian players play club football for Charleroi and Anderlecht, and their league has much less depth than is available to the German players in their national league.  The German squad also has much more international experience, most recently having competed in the 2015 IBSA World Games.

The friendly was part preparations for the upcoming European B1 5-a-side football championships scheduled to take place in August in Hereford, Great Britain.  The competition will be the first major international one for the squad, after only having playing friendlies and development competitions like last year’s IBSA Euro Challenge Cup in their relatively short history. Belgium has been drawn in Group B, where they will meet Spain, Greece and France.
