The competition is an important one on the Paralympic powerlifting schedule as it is a qualification event for both the 2015 Parapan American Games and the 2016 Summer Paralympics. It is the first of five regional qualification events, and it is the first regional championship for the Americas.

To allow lifters the best chance to qualify for Rio, the event is an open one and athletes from around the globe can participate. Lifters from a number of countries have already confirmed their participation, including ones from Honduras.
