Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo announces team for this year’s IPC European Athletics Championship

Yesterday, Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo announced the Portuguese team set to compete at the upcoming IPC Athletics European Championships scheduled to take place in late August in Swansea.  The team includes 22 athletes, and seven officials.

The team appears to be relatively inexperienced, with few members of the team having competed at last year’s world championships.  Four Portuguese who did compete there are not going to Swansea, including Joaquim Machado, Jorge Pina, Tiago Duarte and Gabriel Macchi. That includes two medal winners for Portugal. Thirty-nine year old  Nuno Alves, thirty-two year old Lenine Cunha and forty-five year old María da Graça Fernandes  appear to be the team’s best hope for  medals assuming they have kept the same level of fitness since then.  

 

Portugal’s team includes Cátia Almeida  who is scheduled to compete in the  T20  400 meter and 1,500 meter races.  She is a member of  CP Mangualde  and is coached by  João Mendes.  Competing at last year’s world championships, she finished fourth in the 1,500 meter race with a time of 4:58.69, a little over 18 seconds slower than the gold medalist.  Born in 1991, she was one of the youngest members of the Portuguese team.

 

Cláudia Santos   is scheduled to compete in the  T20 400 meter and long jump events.  She is is coached by  Diogo Almeida. Competing at last year’s world championships, she finished eighth in the long jump.

Cristiano Pereira   is scheduled to compete in the  T20 400 meter and 1500 meter races.  He is a member of   CP de Mangualde  and is coached by João Mendes.  He competed at the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships, making the final of the men’s T20 1,500 meter race, where he finished twelfth with a time of 4:10.13.

 

Eduardo Sanca   is scheduled to compete in the F12 discus and shot put.  He is a member of  AC Pinhal Novense  and is coached by  Sónia Alves.  He competed at last year’s world championships, finishing seventh in the men’s F12 shot put and sixth in the men’s discus.

 

Firmino Baptista   is scheduled to compete in the  T11  100 meter and and 200 meter races.  He is a member of   SLB  and is coached by  António Raposo.  Baptista competed at last year’s world championships in men’s 100 meter race with guide Ivo Vital, where he finished third in his heat with a season’s best time of 11.82.  The 37 year old did not qualify for the final.

 

Inês Fernandes   is scheduled to compete in the  F20 shot put.   She is coached by  Jorge Rodrigues.  Competing at last year’s world championships, she finished fifth in the women’s shot put.  Lenine Cunha   is scheduled to compete in the  F20 long jump.   He is a member of    CDC VN Gaia  and is coached by José Costa Pereira.  At last year’s IPC athletics world championships, he won a bronze medal in the men’s T20 long jump.

 

María da Graça Fernandes  is scheduled to compete in the  T/F 38  400 meter and long jump events.  She is a member of  CDC VN Gaia  and is coached by  António Pereira.  She competed at last year’s world championships, setting a personal best time of 31.34  in the women’s T38 200 meter event but was unable to qualify out of the finals. She picked up a bronze medal in the long jump.

 

María  Odete Fiúza   is scheduled to compete in the  T12  1,500 meter race.  She is a member of  Maratona Clube de Portugal  and is coached by  João Campos.  At least year’s world championships, she competed with guide Joao Campos in the women’s 1,500 meter final where she finished fifth in a time of 5:17.88.  She set a season best time in the semifinal qualifer with 5:14.71.

 

Nélson Gonçalves   is scheduled to compete in the  F11  discus, javelin and shot put events.  He is a member of   GD PIC-NIC  and is coached by  Hélder Silva.  He competed at the 2013 IPC athletics world championships, where he finished eleventh in the men’s shot put, fifth in the men’s javelin in a field only six deep, and tenth in the men’s discus.

 


Nuno Alves   is scheduled to compete in the  T11 1,500 m and 5,000 meter races.  He is a member of   CPPEA  and is coached by  Pedro Pessoa.  He competed at least year’s world championships in the men’s 1,500 meter final, where he had a personal best time of 4:21.54 set with guide Ricardo Abreu and finished just out of medal place in fourth.  He qualified after finishing second in the semifinal with a season’s best time of 4:25.85.  He made the final of the men’s 5,000 meters, where he won a bronze medal after running a season best time of 16:12.69.

 

Raquel Cerqueira   is scheduled to compete in the  T20 400 meter race and the long jump.   She is a member of  CDC VN Gaia  and is coached by  Rui Alecrim.  Competing at last year’s world championships in the long jump, she finished tenth in a field of eleven competitors.


Ricardo Marques   is scheduled to compete in the  F20 shot put.  He is a member of  APPACDM Coimbra  and is coached by  António Oliveira.  At least year’s world championships, he finished eleventh and last in the men’s F20 shot put.

 


José Rodolfo Alves   is scheduled to compete in the  T11  100 m and 200 m  races.  He is a member of  SC Marítimo  and is coached by  José Gonçalves.  He competed at last year’s world championships in the 100 meter race, finishing fourth in his heat with a season best time time of 12.00. He did not qualify for the finals.   He competed in the semi-final of the men’s 200 T12 event, where he finished fourth, with a season best time of 24.42.  He did not qualify for the finals.

 


Samuel Freitas is scheduled to compete in the T20 1,500 meters race.  He is a member of the Clube Os Especiais  and is coached by  José Gonçalvez.  He competed at the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships, making the final of the men’s T20 1,500 meter race, where he finished eleventh with a time of 4:08.34, two seconds faster than teammate Pereira.

 

The team includes António Monteiro who will be competing in the T20  400 m race.  He is a member of CDC VN Gaia and is coached by Nuno Alpiarça. Carlos Ferreira  is scheduled to compete in the T11 1500 meter and 5000 meter races.  He is coached by  Vítor Rego. Carlos Lima  is scheduled to compete in the  T20 400 meter and long jump races.  He is a member of   CD Vitorinos  and is coached by  Emanuel Silva. Érica Gomes   is scheduled to compete in the  T20 long jump.  She is a member of   CDC VN Gaia  and is coached by  Ricardo Monteiro. José Azevedo   is scheduled to compete in the  T20 1500 meter race.  He is  is coached by  João Campos. Luís Gonçalves   is scheduled to compete in the  T12  200 meter and 400 meter races.  He is a member of   CDUL  and is coached by  Nuno Alpiarça. Mário Trindade   is scheduled to compete in the  T52 100 meter and 400 meter races.  He is a member of  ANACR  and is coached by  Eduardo Coelho.
