First day of play at wheelchair tennis’s Belgium Open finishes

With the first day of the Belgium Open finished, there were no upsets with seeded players.


In the women’s competition, top seeded world number three Sabine Ellerbrock easily beat  world number fourteen Dutch player Michaela Spaanstra 6 – 2 and 6 – 0. World number eight and third seeded South African Kgothatso Montjane defeated world ninety-seventh Belgium’s Sophie Cox 6 – 1 and 6 – 1.  Unseeded French player Pauline Heloiun defeated countrywoman Cathy Portier 6 – 1 and 6 – 2. Unseeded United States player Kaitlyn Verfuerth had a bit of  a difficult go at beating French unseeded player Emmanuell Morch, finishing 6 – 3 and 6 – 2.

The right-handed 38 year old Ellerbrock will meet the left-handed 25 year old Heloiun in the second round.  The pair have met two times before, in 2013 at the Atlanta Open Main Draw and at the ACSA SA Open Main Draw in South Africa earlier this year. Ellerbrock won both meetings, blanking Heloiun both times in the second set but allowing her to score in the first game.

The 28 year old Montjane will meet fellow 28 year old Verfuerth in the second round. The last time the pair met was at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, with Verfuerth winning the match 4 – 6 and 0 – 6.


The quad competition had no seeded games yesterday. The Netherlands Dorrie Timmermans-Van Hall defeated the United States’s Greg Hasterok  6 – 3 and 6 – 1, and Timmermans will now meet third seed Italy’s Antonio Raffaele in the second round.  The pair have met 12 times before, but none in the past four years. Timmermans won 9 of those meetings while Raffaele took 3.



Italy’s Giuseppe Polidori defeated Spain’s Victor Garcia Asensio 6 – 0 and 6 – 1. He will meet Great Britain’s Antony Cotteril who is seeded fourth. Polidori and Cotteril have met 7 times since 2008, with their most recent matches coming in 2013. Polidori won the BNP Paribas 2013 World Team Cup while Cotteril won the Sardinia Open Main Draw.


The United States’s David Buck defeated France’s Sophie Fraioli 6 – 0 and 6 – 2. Buck will meet second seed Australia’s Dylan Alcott. Buck and Alcott have met twice so far this season, with Alcott winning both, including blanking Buck 6 – 0 and 6 – 0 at the The Fab-U-Life USTA/ITF Desert Classic Main Draw in the quarterfinals.


There were no seeded games yesterday in the men’s singles competition.  Play continues today.
