First goalball competition between UK universities held

On Tuesday, the first ever British university goalball competition took place at University of Nottingham’s Jubilee sports centre when University of Nottingham took on Nottingham Trent University.



Nottingham Trent University won the game by a score of 17 – 10.  Their roster included  Liam Mackin, Molly O’Brien, Emma Poynton-Smith, Sarah Stephenson and Sophie Unwin. University of Nottingham’s roster included  Graham Bowe, Bilal Hussain, Shamaila Kauser and Abbas Zaib.  Sarah Stephenson was named the female player of the match, and was awarded a “This Girl Can” jumper. Unofficially, the match was part of University of Nottingham varsity sports series.


The claim of the first ever university competitions was held in March of this year at  Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver, Washington.  It was organized by Portland State University in Oregon.   Three universities competed including hosts Portland State University, University of California-Berkley and Slippery Rock University.
