Great Britain wins IBSA European Men’s C Goalball Championships

Yesterday in Malmö, Sweden, Great Britain won IBSA European Men’s C Goalball Championships.  Russia finished in second and Portugal finished in third.  These three teams will play in the Men’s B competition during 2016.

The gold medal game came down to extra time after regulation time ended 5 – 5. With the first team to score winning, Team GB put the ball in the back of the net first. Russia’s Sergej led the tournament in scoring with 23 goals.

 

Portugal finished third after defeating Italy 9 – 4, after taking a 5 – 4 lead into the half.  Early in the second, they scored to quick goals before cruising the rest of the way towards victory.

 

The British side included David Butler of Nottingham, Filmon Eyassu of Cambridge, Adam Knott and David Knott of Winchester, and Daniel Roper from RNC Hereford.  Faye Dale coached the national side.  The team came into the competition ranked 18th in the world, the best of all teams in the competition.  In comparison, the Russians were ranked  26th in the world, while the Portuguese were ranked 41st in the world and Italy was ranked  32nd in the world.
