Jordan’s Black Iris Awards announce Paralympic Athlete of the Year nominees

The Jordan Olympic Committee announced the Black Iris Awards Paralympic Athlete of the Year  nominees earlier this week, with powerlifter Mutaz Zakaria Daoud Aljuneidi, powerlifter Abdelkareem Mohammad Ahma Khattab and table tennis player Khetam Kamal Hasan Abuawad getting nominations. The nominations came from the media, and people are able to vote for the winners on Facebook.

Thirty-eight year old powerlifter Mutaz Zakaria Daoud Aljuneidi competed at last year’s Para Asian Games in the 87kg class, where he won a silver medal with a 220.0 result.  At the end of the year, he was ranked first in the world in the Men’s Up to 88.00kg class.  He won a gold at last year’s IPC Powerlifting World Championships in Dubai with a world record lift of Men’s Up to 229kg.

Twenty-three year old Abdelkareem Mohammad Ahma Khattab came away with a gold medal in the 71kg class at the 2014 Para Asian Games.  He finished the year ranked fifth in the world in the Men’s Up to 72.00kg class.  At last year’s Dubai hosted IPC Powerlifting World Championships, he finished fifth with a lift of 191kg.

Khetam Kamal Hasan Abuawad was a double bronze medalist in table tennis at the 2014 Para Asian Games.  She is no stranger to this award, as she won it in 2006, 2007 and 2008.


Last year, the award was won by wheelchair marathoner Ali Al Sawalmeh,  wheelchair marathoner Suhail Al Nashash  was the 2012 winner, and powerlifter Mutaz Zakaria Daoud Aljuneidi won in 2011.
