T42 is the first class in the T40s generally where you find athletes with amputees. The T40s also sometimes include people with Les Autres conditions and spinal cord injuries. T42 is specifically for single above the knee leg amputees, people who would have been classified F8 or F9 in the old ambulant spinal cord injury classes, and Les Autres competitors with normal upper limb functionality but who have balance issues with their lower limbs. There are a whole lot of different disabilities potentially represented in T42.
The oldest record in this class is the women’s 400 meter race, set by Sarah Reinertsen of the United States way back in 1999 at a race in Barcelona, Spain. The next oldest records for this class date back to the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing. China’s Baozhu Zheng set a world record in the women’s discus at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens with a throw of 31.19 meters and then bettered this at the 2008 Games with a throw of 33.19 meters. A similar situation exists with the shotput. Zheng set a world record in 2006 with a throw of 9.65 meters and then bettered it at the home hosted Paralympics with a record of 10.06 meters. The last current world record from 2008 was set by Germany’s Claudia Biene with a throw of 31.51 meters set at a competition in Chinese Taipei shortly after the 2008 Games concluded.
The women’s long jump is the event with the largest available progression record in the class with three different sportswomen having claimed it since 2006. Back in 2006 in Espoo, Finland, Germany’s Salome Kretz set a world record with a jump of 3.77 meters. 5 years later at the IPC Athletics World Championships, Australia’s Kelly Cartwright broke it with a jump of 4.19 meters. 4 years later at a different World Championship, Vanessa Low claimed the world record back for her country with a jump of 4.79 meters.
