Earlier today in the First Annual Sunshine Shootout, the Miami Heat Wheels defeated the Shepard Steelers by a score of 53 – 37. In another game in the tournament, Tampa Bay Strong Dogs Wheelchair Basketball defeated the Fort Lauderdale Sharks 49 – 36.
The team came into the competition following tremendous success at the Fort Lauderdale Sharks Invitational Tournament and a tournament earlier this month in Puerto Rico where the team went 4 – 0. The Heat Wheels made the decision to compete in the Sunshine Shootout despite funding situations that made it difficult to pay accomodation during the competition.
The tournament is a NWBA sanctioned event that was open to Division III teams that had finished in the top twenty in the previous season.
The team includes Carlos Martinez, Dirrick Hughes, Eduardo Thompson, Jackson David, Jairo Mendez, Jeremie Thomas, Luis Amaro, Manuel Rodriguez, Mario Moran, Marvin Valcourt, Miki Erez, Orlando Carrillo, Raul Acosta, Ryan Galvez, Willy Rodriguez, Almelio Pena and Jose Prado. The team has a real international feel with players born in the United States, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Israel, Venezuela and Cuba.
