Rangi was beat in his heat by Malaysia’s Nasharuddin Mohd who had a time of 52.75 and Japan’s Tsubasa Kuramoto who had a time of 53.56. The other heat ran similar times to his, with Malaysia’s Muhd Nurdin Ibrahim posting a time of 53.19, Japan’s Ryota Kitamura who had a time of 53.61, and Japan’s Shota Ishida with a time of 54.17. Countryman Keelan Ward qualified with Rangi into the final after posting a time of 1:03.42.

Both Rangi and Ward have spent the early part of this year competing at track meets in Australia.  Rangi’s time in Dubai was consistent with earlier performances, but slower than the 2016 ACT Athletics Championships in the 400 where he posted a time of 00:55.15.  Ward’s time was also off the time he posted at the 2016 ACT Athletics Championships of 01:03.22.

21-year-old Rangi will need to really improve on his time if he is to stand a chance at earning a medal.  In his only other event in Dubai, he finished fifth in the men’s T20 long jump final with a best jump of 4.86.  The men’s T20 400m is 19-year-old Keelan’s only event in Dubai.  The pair are the only New Zealand competitors at the 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championships.
