Nigerian named as table tennis umpire for 2016 Paralympics

This past week, the Cecilia Arinye was named by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) as an umpire for the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Outside of table tennis, Arinye serves as the  Director of Sports at the University of Lagos.


Arinye will be joined in Rio by countryperson John Peters, who was selected to umpire at the Olympic Games.  Peters is a long time table tennis umpire, with many years officiating at international competitions.

49 umpires have been selected by the IITF to officiate at either the Olympic or Paralympic Games.  Only three African countries had umpires selected among this group, Nigeria, Algeria and Egypt.
