Former Comitato Regionale FIDAL Lazio President Andrea Milardi died yesterday following an illness. The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow at Stadio Raul Guidobaldi in Rieti, Italy. Milardi had been a big promoter of Paralympic athletics.
Federazione Italiana Sport Paralimpici e Sperimentalii (FISPES) said in a statement regarding his death, “We offer our deepest condolences of the Federal President Sandrino Porru and all FISPES for the passing of a “father’s Italian athletics”, Prof. Andrea Milardi. Prof. Milardi, always at the forefront in the growth of the discipline and in the search for new talent, has always supported the Paralympic athletics, opening the doors of Guidobaldi Stadium in Rieti with the first Corporate Championships two years ago with the creation an unprecedented event for organizational and professional caliber. The Professor was also promoter, for the first time in Italy, of a joint organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Absolute Championships of 2016, which is always held in Rieti next June to July.”
Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera said of his passing, “FIDAL President Alfio Giomi, on behalf of the Federal Council and of the Italian athletics, expresses its deepest condolences to his wife Cecilia, children Alberto, Maria Chiara, Maria Vittoria and the whole big family Rieti athletics this time deep sorrow.” They went on to quota Giomi as saying, “Men like Andrea Milardi – the memory of President Giomi – do not go away because what they leave behind has had such a great impact. In more than forty years of history with Atletica Studentesca CA.RI.RI, whole generations have discovered athletics through the eye technical, the role of educator and soul of feeder enthusiast who has always distinguished it. We are born champions, but especially so many men and women who will always bear within them an experience and a life lesson that go far beyond the boundaries of the track. that ring of four hundred meters in which each of us has seen flowing emotions that shaped our lives and in which Andrea Milardi did blossom and grow athletics. ”
Milardi was best known for founding Atletica Studentesca CA.RI.RI in 1975 after there were funding issues for Athletic Alco Rieti. He continued to be involved with Atletica Studentesca CA.RI.RI, and was the club’s technical director at the time of his death. He went on to be involved with Comitato Regionale Lazio della FIDAL, serving as the organization’s president from 1992 to 2004. After leaving that post, he served as a middle distance coordinator until 2001. He was a member of the national board of Italian athletics from 2009 to 2012.
In 1994, he was awarded the Ordine al merito della Repubblica Italiana for his work.
