Yesterday, Raphael Gregório won the boccia BC1 competition at Brazil’s South Regional Championship (Campeão do Regional Sul). This is not the first time Gregório has won the event.  He also won it in 2011, competing for ADFP.

Gregório is no stranger to winning and competing at the highest level. He won the 2009 Brazilian national championships. He has represented Brazil internationally.  At the 2011 Boccia World Championships, he qualified into the quarterfinals and then into the semifinals before being eliminated.  He is currently ranked 33rd in the world.

Brazil has a strong history of being one of the best boccia countries in the world.  While Gregório was not part of the Brazilian team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, his countrymen won three gold medals and a bronze in London.  They were the best performing country in boccia at the Games, ahead of Thailand who had two golds, and ahead of China who had three silver medals.  Brazil was also the top country at the 2008 Summer Paralympics along side South Korea.
