South Korea’s national team had an inaugural meeting, organized by Korea Paralympic Committee (KPC) at the Korean Sports Training center d’ground on March 18, ahead of the 2015 Winter Deaflympics in Khanty-Manisysk and Magnitogorsk, Russia.
Guests including President of KPC Sung-il Kim, Vice-Minister of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Jong Kim and athletes’ family attended the meeting to encourage athletes. South Korea will participate in its first ever Winter Deaflympic Games this year. The country made top three in the medal table at the Summer Deaflympics in 2009 and 2013 consecutively. Therefore it is hoping that the remarkable achievements of the summer events lead to the winter games.
The team consists of 43 members including ten coaches and six sign language interpreters, and 14 athletes with a hearing impairment will compete in curling, alpine and cross country skiing
344 deaf athletes from 27 countries will take part in the event from March 28 till April 5. They will contest in five sports (alpine skiing, cross country skiing, curling, snowboard, and ice hockey). The biggest team is the host nation, Russia with 76 athletes. Meanwhile, Mongolia, Slovenia, Armenia and Estonia will send only one athlete to represent each country.
