Yesterday, San Diego Ducks Sled Hockey losing both their games at the USA Hockey Disabled Festival in Buffalo, New York.
The Ducks opened against Colorado Avalanche, dropping the game 0 – 5 with Joseph Chavez in goal. Gene Bachman scored 3 and Robynne Hill scored 2 for the Avalanche.
In their second game, they lost 0 – 7 to the Buffalo Warriors in a game that saw marked improvement of the team’s first game against the Avalanche. Matt Bettencourt got a roughing penalty in the loss.
The Ducks met the Space Coast Hurricanes later today at 6:40 PM local time. Their final game is likely at on Sunday at 11:30 AM in the Adult Sled Liberty “C” Bracket consolidation final.
The San Diego squad includes Chavez and Karina Mendoza. When not on the ice, Chavez serves as the goalkeeper for the United States men’s national 7-a-side football team. The team was founded a few years by Sarah Bettencourt, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who has a rare neurological disorder that forced her into retirement in 2012. The team practices twice a week, on Thursday at 5:45 PM and Sundays at 4:30 AM, at the UTC mall ice rink on La Jolla Village Dr. in San Diego.
