Last night, the Singapore 7-a-side football team gathered at Tanjong Pagar CC to pay tribute to country’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who died on Monday at the age of 91. The team expressed their feelings about his death saying, “We thank you Sir, for all the sacrifices that you have made for us. You will always be remembered in our heart !”
Lee Kuan Yew was Singapore’s first Prime Minister. He is largely credited with having to modernized the country after he came to power in 1959, back before the country had independence and was a British colony. He stayed in power during the country’s brief merger with Malaysia. He continued to hold the office until 199, when he resigned and there was a smooth transition in power.
The Singapore team should be in action in December when they compete at the home hosted 2015 Asean Para Games. At last year’s Asian Para Games, Singapore finished fourth and last behind Japan, Iran and Singapore. The country had a team participating in the four team deep 7-a-side Development Tournament – Vienna 2013. They finished fourth. The country was one of six countries that participated in the 2012 Asian Dream Tournament in Abu Dhabi. They finished third.
