The Slovenian Deaf Sports Association announce today that deaf basketball player Miha Zupan was set to compete at FIBA men’s World Cup for his native country.  Zupan is the only deaf player in the competition.

The competition is scheduled to get underway tomorrow in Spain, with Slovenia scheduled to play Australia in Gran Canaria. In the lead up to the competition, Zupan participated in friendlies in Ljubljana against Brazil, Iran and Lithuania.  In a preparation game before those against Canada in July, he scored 9 points

Zupan also represented Slovenia at the 2010 FIBA Men’s World Cup in Turkey where his team finished eighth.  That year, he was also named the World Deaf Athlete of the Year by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf.

Born deaf, Zupan began his professional career in 2006 in the Slovenian league, before going to play for a professional team in Greece in 2009.  Later he played for teams in Russia and Turkey.
