Sweden finishes ninth at Wheelchair Curling World Championships

With the 2015 Wheelchair Curling World Championships having concluded today, the Swedish team finished in ninth place.

The finish puts them out of automatic qualifying for the next world championships, so Sweden, Norway and Scotland will need to go through that process if they desire to compete at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in South Korea.  Sweden finished group play with 3 wins and 6 losses. Sweden’s losses to  Scotland and Germany put them lower than these countries on the tie break, or Germany would have been relegated.

Yesterday, the team lost a crucial game against China in group play, finishing 5 – 6.  In other games in group play, Sweden beat Finland 8 – 4, after leading 4 – 1 after four ends.  The day before saw Sweden defeat the United States 7 – 6.  Earlier in the competition, Sweden lost to Slovakia 4 – 6, to Russia 3 – 5, to Canada 4 – 6, to Germany 6 – 8, and to Scotland 2 – 6.  They beat Norway 7 – 6.

The competition was won by China for the first time after they defeated Russia in the finals.
