This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News.  The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.

Worldwide, there are only about 110,000 Asturian speakers and almost all of them are in Spain as the language is a West Iberian one.  There are a couple of great Spanish Paralympians from the region where the language is spoken.  So while your opportunities to find people to speak it may be limited, it may come in handy if you hit that one event with Spaniards attending it from this region.  After you show off your few words in the language, get an invite home because Spain has great food.

General disability words:

  • Ceguera – Blindness

Countries:

  • Alemaña – Germany

Judo specific words:

  • Dojo – Dojo
  • Yudu – Judo
  • Proyeición – Throw
  • Patada – Kick
  • Kyu – Kyū
