This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News. The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.
Belarusian is spoken by 3.2 million speakers. The East Slavic language, sometimes refered to as “White Russian”, is similar enough to both Russian and Ukrainian that they are mutually intelligible. People speak the language in a number of countries including Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Lithuania and Russia. With 31 athletes competing in 7 different sports, Belarus came away big winners in London. The country amassed 5 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 3 bronze medals. Athletes participated in cycling, athletics, judo, powerlifting, rowing, swimming and wheelchair fencing.
