Talking the lingo in Rio: Chatting with your new Georgian speaking friends about football

This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News.  The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.

With a language code of KA and country code of GEO, you have the Georgian language.  The country of Georgia made their Paralympic debut in 2008 and then competed again in London.  With their most famous disability athlete being an arm wrestler, there may be a struggle in finding people to talk to in this language which has been described by some people as one of the most difficult in the world to learn.  Still, people appreciate when you make the effort…

Sport specific words:

  • პარაოლიმპიური თამაშები – Paralympic Games

Football specific words:

  • დამატებითი დრო – Overtime
  • მცველი – Defender
  • თავდამსხმელი – Forward
  • ნახევარმცველი – Midfielder
  • ფეხბურთი – Football
