Talking the lingo in Rio: Chatting with your new Japanese speaking friends about golf

This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News.  The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.


With Japan set to host the 2020 Summer Paralympics, it might not be soon enough to start practicing your Japanese.  They do not use the Latin script, so you may need some real additional assistance figuring out how to speak any words you can recognize on fight.   Still, with 125 million speakers and Japan hosting in 2020, there are some real benefits for going beyond just sight recognition of a few words.

General disability words:

  • 失調 – Ataxia
  • アテトーゼ – Athetosis
  • 失明 – Blindness
  • 脳性麻痺 – Cerebral palsy
  • 目 – Eye
  • 眼帯 – Eyepatch
  • ロービジョン – low vision
  • 多発性硬化症 – Multiple sclerosis
  • 筋ジストロフィー – Muscular dystrophy

Sport specific words:

  • アジア記録 – Asian record
  • アジアパラ競技大会 – Asian Para Games
  • 障害者スポーツ – Disability sport
  • フェスピック – FESPIC Games
  • プレイフィールド – field of play
  • 競技エリア – field of play
  • 国際視覚障害者スポーツ連盟 – International Blind Sports Federation
  • 日本障がい者スポーツ協会 – Japanese Disability Sport Association
  • 日本知的障害者スポーツ連盟 – Japanese ID Sport Federation
  • 日本記録 – Japanese record
  • パラリンピック – Paralympic Games
  • 上腕三頭筋 – Triceps brachii muscle
  • 世界記録 – world record

Golf specific words:

While golf may not be on the Paralympic program, there are a lot of disability players of the sport.

  • ブラインドゴルフ – Blind golf
  • 日本ブラインドゴルフ振興協会 – Japanese Blind Golf Association
  • ゴルフ – Golf
  • 日本視覚障害ゴルファーズ協会 – Japanese Visually Impaired Golfers Association
