Talking the lingo in Rio: Chatting with your new Latin speaking friends about football

This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News.  The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.

Latin is the official language of only two places:  Sovereign Military Order of Malta and  Vatican City.  It is considered a classical language, and is spoken now mostly in academic settings.  Accents very depending on where a person learned the language.  Having some knowledge of the language is useful for understanding a variety of other Romance languages including French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Romanian. Latin and French.  Having a few words in your language speaking arsenal thus cannot hurt.

Football specific words:

  • Pila – Ball
  • Campana – Bell
  • Pediludium – Football
  • Pediludii follis – soccer ball
