Talking the lingo in Rio: Chatting with your new Luxembourgish speaking friends about football

This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News.  The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.


Luxembourgish is spoken by around 400,000 peopl, most of them in Luxembourg.   The language is a variety of West Central German.  Luxembourg did not send a delegation to the 2012 Summer Paralympics.  Thus, the language may not be super useful for Rio.

  • Ball – Ball
  • Gol – Goal
  • Foussball – Soccer
  • Fédération luxembourgeoise de football – Luxembourg Football Federation
