This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News.  The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.

Turkish is spoken by 63 million people in Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Azerbaijan, Kosovo, Romania, Iraq, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The language is native to Turkey, and is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages.  The language uses the Latin alphabet, having made the switch from the Perso-Arabic alphabet in 1928.  Knowing a few words may be useful as Turkey often probably will have large delegation competing.  They sent 69 athletes to London who competed in 10 sports including archery, athletics, 5-a-side football, goalball, powerlifting, shooting, judo, swimming, table tennis and wheelchair basketball.  These athletes claimed 10 medals, including 1 gold, 5 silvers and 4 bronze medals.
