This article is a series of language learning posts by ParaSport News. The goal is to provide sport fans some very basic sport and Paralympic vocabulary so you can talk with the world about disability sport at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.
Worldwide, there are only about 740,000 speakers with 580,000 of them living in Wales. Small populations of speakers live elsewhere including England, Argentina, United States, Canada and New Zealand. As the Commonwealth Games have demonstrated though, Wales can and does produce some quality Paralympic athletes. Knowing a few words can help make new friends.
General disability words:
- Dallineb – Blindness
- Sglerosis ymledol – Multiple sclerosis
- Cadair olwyn – wheelchair
Sport specific words:
- Gemau Paralympaidd – Paralympic Games
- Cyhyryn triphen – Triceps brachii muscle
Shooting specific words:
- Pistol – Pistol
- Bwled – Bullet
- Arf tân – Firearm
- Reiffl – Rifle
- Gwn aer – Air gun
