The Iraqi Family Protection Unit names Dhi Qar Disabled Sports Club best in country

Earlier today on Facebook, the Iraqi Paralympic Committee said that the Iraqi Family Protection Unit named Dhi Qar Disabled Sports Club as best sports club in the country for people with disabilities.

Based in Dhi Qar, the club has swimming, athletics powerlifting, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball programs, with athletes competing on a national and international level.  They have benefited from programs in the past, including one in 2010 that saw its best players get wheelchair basketball specific chairs to use for competition. Last year, one of the clubs powerlifters competed at the IPC Powerlifting World Championships-  At the 2012 national swimming championships, club members won 8 gold medals.

Disability sport in Iraq faces issues, both in terms of sportsperson security because of the ongoing conflict and because of budget cuts.
