Turkey women’s national goalball team qualifies for the 2016 Summer Paralympics

Earlier today, Turkey women’s national goalball team qualified for the 2016 Summer Paralympics after finishing third at the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships.

They defeated Japan 3-0 in a game that had a 9:20 AM local start time in Espoo, Finland.

Coming into the game against Japan, Turkish player Sevda Altunoluk led all women in scoring throughout the competition with 28 total goals. Teammate Seda Yildiz was tenth, with 10 total goals.

Prior to the competition, Turkey’s women were ranked eighth in the world.  They had been ranked fifth in the world in October of last year.  The team only became active internationally around in the early 2000s.  They only began to see major international success around 2010 when they finished second in IBSA European Championships Goalball Women B, and at the 2013 Turkey hosted European Championships where they also finished second.
