Turkey’s goalball men defeat Mexico 9 – 5 at IBSA World Games

Turkey kick started the competition in Group A play at 9:00 AM local time with a 9 – 5 victory against Mexico.



Ekrem Gundogdu  scored first for Turkey, with teammate Tuncay Karakaya then providing an additional goal. Hector Carreno Guendulay answered back for Mexico, with Ulises Francisco Martinez providing a second goal to even things up. Karakaya answered back to give the Turkisk side the lead. Gundogdu scored his second. Huseyin Alkan opened up the score some more, giving Turkey a 5 – 2 lead. Gundogdu scored again to give Turkey a 6 – 2 lead at the end of the first half.


The Mexican side came into the second half fighting hard to claim victory. Jose Ismael Alvarez Gomez scored for Mexico, and then Guendulay scored a pair to bring the Mexicans to within one point.  The 61st ranked Mexicans could not hold off world number two. Karakaya answered back with two goals, and then Gundogdu answered back for the game to finish 9 – 5 with neither side getting any team or personal penalties.


Mexico plays again tomorrow when they meet Spain.  Turkey next plays hosts South Korea.
