Two Irish wheelchair rugby teams in Germany for Bernd Best Tournament 2015

The Bernd Best Tournament 2015 scheduled to get underway later today in Cologne, Germany with two Irish teams among the 41 teams competing, Laois Lions and Ulster Barbarians.



The Ulster roster includes Bernard Rooney, Tom Carey, Lorcan  Carey, David  Ross, Paul  McLister, Martin  Coleman, and Shane  Delaney.  They are captained Rooney, whom the team describes as “their spiritual leader, mentor and sexiest man in the history of Paralympic sport”.


The Lions roster includes Stephen Hickey  Amy Fitzpatrick, Ronan O’Keefe, Jade Hurley, and Ger Scully.  They are captained by Hickey, with Ciara Staunton serving as the team’s coach.


The competition is divided into four leagues, including a professional league.  Canada has sent a development team to participate in the tournament for the second year in a tow, and they will be competing in the professional league.  Spain is also sending teams for the first time.
