United States women split 2 games to 2 games against Russian women’s national sitting volleyball team

Last night, the United States split their pair of games against  Russian women’s national sitting volleyball team the  Russian women’s national sitting volleyball team at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.  Going into Sunday with more games on the schedule, Russia and the United States are tied at in the friendly series because they also split their games they played on Friday.



Yesterday morning’s sets went 25 – 23, 20 – 25, 25 – 22, and 25 – 13. Yesterday afternoon, the United States had a bit more difficulty, going 23 – 25, 25 – 17, 20 – 25, 25 – 16, and 15 – 13. Friday morning, the United States went 25 – 18, 13 – 25, 25 – 23, 11 – 25, and 15 – 8. Like Saturday, the Russians did better in the afternoon with the United States going 31 – 33, 20 – 25, 25 – 19, 25 – 22, and 15 – 5.


Key players for the United States in this series have been Katie Holloway, who yesterday morning had 16 points with 12 kills on 30 attacks to go with three blocks and an ace. Monique Burkland was another key player yesterday morning, with 12 points with four aces, four blocks and four kills.  Throughout the series so far, Lexi Shifflett  has been the team kills leader at 29%.


Members of the United States squad includes Lora Webster, Bethany Zummo, Lexi Shifflett, Katie Holloway, Heather Erickson, Monique Burkland, Angie Palacio, Nichole Millage, Nicky Nieves, Tia Edwards, and Courtney Baker.

The Russian roster includes Irina Smirnova, Tatiana Ivanova, Yulia Zakrevskaya, Irina Panina, Ekaterina Chepkiy, Iulia Mednikova, Elizaveta Kuntsman, Liubov Permiakova, Marina Karaseva, Olga Arbatskaya, and Natalia Kolbasova.


The United States women are currently ranked third in the world, while Russia is ranked seventh.  The friendlies against the Russians are taking place at the Colorado Crossroads sitting volleyball competition.  The event is one of twelve national qualifiers for the 2015 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.
