Yesterday in Santiago, Chile, the Uruguay men’s national team won wheelchair basketball’s Copa Andina after defeating Peru 64-58 in the final.
Uruguay had to come from behind to win, as they trailed Peru by 1 at the end of the first quarter 17-18. At the end of the half, they had a slight lead of 32-29. Holding the Peruvians to 9 points while scoring 11, they built an even bigger lead by the end of the third which finished 43-38. While they allowed the Peruvians 20 points in the last quarter, they managed to score 21 of their own to finish with a 6 point lead.
Uruguayan national team member Jorge Lapaz was quoted by the Chilean Paralympic Committee as saying after the game, “We are very good. We fulfilled our objective to qualify for the South American championships, and then we did the other part that was to win the tournament. The most difficult matches were against Chile and Peru, but we are did well in both games because we always acted as a team.”
Three other teams participated in the competition, with hosts Chile finishing third after defeating Bolivia 59-39 in the third place match. Ecuador finished fifth.
